Dave’s thoughts about Salt Water Taffy: As a kid, a trip to the beach took forever, although in my case, I lived only 30 minutes away. Then, I spent another half hour in very slow traffic looking for a “good” parking space. Then, everyone unpacked the car loaded with blankets and baskets of food and drinks. Finally, that mad dash to freezing, cold water. (In New England, the cold water hurts your ankles, even in the summer.) But, the warm sun, the smell of the ocean and sun tan lotion, and the sound of the waves and sea birds left a lifelong impression.
And there was one more special treat I could count on: Salt Water Taffy. Although I couldn’t figure out why its name contained “salt,” the chewy chunks of sweetness were anything but salty. I could also count on an argument with the other kids over who got what flavor or which was best.
